SEO and GEO: build measurable search visibility

Practical guide

A practical guide to crawlability, evidence-led content, entity clarity and measurable search, AI citation and business outcomes.

Conceptual illustration of customer needs, products and market research

SEO and GEO start with useful, reliable content that readers can find and understand. Search rankings, citations in AI answers and qualified enquiries are different outcomes. Adding structured data or FAQs does not establish that any of them improved.

This guide is for brand websites, industry knowledge publishers and business content teams. Product search within a marketplace requires a separate review of that platform's current data and operating rules.

1. Define the result before changing the page

ChannelQuestionEvidence
Organic searchWhich non-brand questions bring the right readers?Queries, impressions, clicks, pages, countries, devices and reporting period
AI answersWhich answers actually cite this website?Full prompt, engine/version, date, complete answer and cited URLs
Business actionDid readers complete a valuable next step?Attribution linked to successful registrations, applications or qualified enquiries
Marketplace searchIs the product information accurate and compliant?Marketplace reports, conversion data and current platform requirements

Record brand mentions, citations and referral visits separately. Keep prompts, languages, regions, devices and observation periods consistent when comparing results.

Google's generative AI search guide explains that there is no special GEO schema or required article length. Google Search ignores llms.txt for visibility and ranking. Other services should be assessed against their own documentation and actual access records.

2. Make the right content accessible

Crawlability and indexing

CheckImplementationVerification
Status codesReturn 200 for valid content and 404/410 for missing contentRead the actual response and body; detect soft 404s
Canonical URLsPoint to the final preferred pageCompare final URL, canonical, internal links and sitemap
SitemapInclude intended, indexable canonical pagesGenerate it from actual content and publication state
Drafts and account pagesApply the intended indexing policyInspect robots directives in the raw HTML or response headers
Internal linksConnect hubs, guides and related contentFollow real links from the homepage, not only sitemap entries
LanguagesReturn the corresponding language at each URLCheck self-canonical URLs and reciprocal hreflang alternatives

A successful HTTP request and permissive robots.txt demonstrate accessibility at the time of the test. Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools is needed to confirm actual indexing. Server or firewall logs are needed to verify access by real crawlers.

Core Web Vitals

Use LCP, INP and CLS. INP replaced FID in 2024; an old FID threshold is not a current Core Web Vitals acceptance test.

MetricGood thresholdMeaning
LCP≤ 2.5 secondsMain-content loading
INP≤ 200 millisecondsResponsiveness after interaction
CLS≤ 0.1Visual stability

Assess the 75th percentile of real page loads, separately for mobile and desktop. Lab tests help diagnose issues. A single lab score cannot substitute for missing field data.

Images and video

Serve images at suitable display sizes and provide appropriate mobile sources and compression. Give informative images meaningful alternatives. Support talks and demonstrations with speakers, topics, key points and written summaries.

Fix observed bottlenecks—such as large above-the-fold resources, long tasks or layout shifts—then repeat the same test conditions.

3. Publish evidence readers cannot get elsewhere

Build around real working questions

Organise content around problems such as evaluating RAG answer quality or deciding which OPC tasks need human approval. A complete guide can address related questions. Near-identical pages for every wording variation add little value.

Useful pages provide an answer, conditions, steps, examples, sources and further reading. Tables and FAQs explain distinctions; their quantity is not an outcome metric.

Separate teaching scenarios from measured cases

Teaching examples can explain a method. Claims about project performance require actual records.

Case fieldWhat to record
ScopeWorkflow, team or user group, including exclusions
BaselineHow time, cost, quality or business results were measured
MethodData, tool versions, human intervention and adoption conditions
ObservationSample, period, metric definitions, failures and rework
ResultsObserved values and releasable source evidence; keep forecasts separate
LimitsOther changes, sample constraints and unresolved explanations

Do not turn correlation into a causal claim. Obtain permission before publishing a customer or partner's information. Start with the application paths and teaching cases, then use this table to design your own assessment.

Attribution, review and maintenance

Credit the actual writer or responsible publishing organisation. Record a human reviewer, date and scope only after the review occurs. A cited paper's authors are not automatically the authors of your page.

For tools, pricing, rules and model capabilities, retain the source and check date. Trace strong numerical claims to the original method, sample, region and period. A vendor article's uplift percentage is not a forecast for a different website or every AI engine.

4. Describe actual content with structured data

Choose types that match the page: organisation, article, learning resource, course, event or product. Prices, stock, authors, dates and reviews must agree with visible facts.

This function builds a basic object from actual product input. It rejects incomplete input and does not invent ratings or sales figures.

function buildProductData(product) {
  if (!product || typeof product.name !== "string" || !product.name.trim()) {
    throw new Error("Product name required");
  }
  if (typeof product.currency !== "string" || !/^[A-Z]{3}$/.test(product.currency)) {
    throw new Error("Three-letter currency code required");
  }
  const url = new URL(product.url);
  if (url.protocol !== "https:" || url.username || url.password) {
    throw new Error("Public HTTPS product URL required");
  }
  if (!["string", "number"].includes(typeof product.price)) {
    throw new Error("Actual current price required");
  }
  const price = String(product.price).trim();
  if (!/^\d+(?:\.\d+)?$/.test(price) || !Number.isFinite(Number(price))) {
    throw new Error("Invalid current price");
  }
  return {
    "@context": "https://schema.org",
    "@type": "Product",
    name: product.name.trim(),
    url: url.href,
    offers: {
      "@type": "Offer",
      price,
      priceCurrency: product.currency,
      url: url.href
    }
  };
}

After checking syntax, verify factual accuracy and current eligibility for search features. Parseable JSON does not guarantee rich results, rankings or AI citations.

5. Measure search and AI visibility

Establish a comparable baseline

Retain available query, page, impression, click and qualified-action data. Separate brand and non-brand queries. Keep language, region, device and observation windows consistent. If history is unavailable, start recording now and preserve the gap.

Record AI citations

FieldRequirement
QuestionFull wording and use case; keep it stable
PlatformEngine, visible version, date and region
AnswerComplete response and cited URLs
Website resultWhether the canonical page was cited and correctly attributed
ComparisonSources appearing for the same question, with original evidence

Check Google's current Search Console requirements and reports. Bing AI Performance provides citation, cited-page and grounding-query information. Citation Share is the share of citations for a specified grounding query; it is not an industry ranking or website authority score.

Connect visibility to meaningful action

Link attribution to backend-confirmed registrations, applications or qualified enquiries. Record visits, button clicks and successful submissions separately. Preserve small samples, unknown sources and cross-device limitations rather than assigning unexplained outcomes to AI or organic search.

6. Repeat an evidence-led improvement cycle

  1. Check access, indexing, errors and canonical URLs.
  2. Review the questions answered and information that has become outdated.
  3. Add releasable first-hand cases, methods, professional views or data.
  4. Choose a substantive change and retain its version and date.
  5. Compare search, citation and qualified-action results under the same conditions.

Avoid paid link schemes, fabricated reviews and mass-produced near-duplicate pages. Sustainable visibility comes from professional work that can be checked, cited and maintained.

Audit prompt

Review the actual pages and search data supplied.
Inputs: URL, raw HTML, authorised sources and observation period.
Separate observed facts, defects, unknowns, actions and acceptance checks.
Mark unavailable volumes, rankings, AI citation rates and conversion data unverified.
Cite original sources and separate examples from measured results.
Identify the questions requiring confirmation by the website or data owner.
